CHAPTER NINETEEN

I didn’t want to ruin his cute pep talk by pointing out the little asterisk in his comment. He guided me out of the kitchen and toward the foyer. We heard many voices and footsteps, and my heart sank when we reached the door to the entrance hall and found the Adler clan crowded about one of the newcomers, a handsome woman I guessed was Lady Victoria Siegel.

I could see why Max was pleased with her. Lady Victoria was a beauty to behold, with long black hair and a pale complexion to offset the darkness. Her dark eyes were perfectly spaced from a perfectly thin nose and her lips were pressed into an eternally sardonic smile. She wore an elegant black blouse with flare pants that went well with her over-extravagant black boots.

Grau and his servant were trying their best to herd the lady and the Adlers down the hall. “If you would please follow me to the parlor we can await their presence there,” our host instructed them.

Lady Victoria shook her head. “I will not be delayed in seeing this Key and his Clasp. No one should be without a number and I must see to it that the Senate rules are strictly followed.”

Her dark eyes were making a thorough inspection of the foyer when they locked on me. Recognition filled them and her mouth opened slightly in surprise. My heart skipped a beat and Tegan tugged us along at a faster pace.

“Stop!” she shouted as she rushed toward us. “Stop, in the name of the Senate!”

That was our cue to sprint down the hall. Tegan ignited one palm and tossed the fireball onto the floor. It fizzled out on the stones but gave us a better head start. We reached the door and I flung it open to reveal the plain room that Grau had once occupied. We hurried inside and Tegan securely shut the door behind us. He pushed his shoulder against the entrance a moment before someone pounded against it.

“Open this door!” Lady Siegel shouted. “Open it immediately, renegades!”

I dropped to the floor beside the bed and stuck my hands into the darkness. My fingers felt something lumpy and I yanked out a worn leather bag with a drawstring mouth. I fumbled with the string even as the pounding on the door grew louder. The old wood began to crack under the strain.

“That is enough!” Grau shouted. “You have no right to destroy my property!”

“Arrest him immediately!” Lady Victoria yelled. “And know that the emperor sides with the Senate on these matters of betrayal!”

A scuffle ensued and Grau’s strained voice spoke up. “I have no allegiance to such a mob as you belong to!”

“Baron Grau!” the Lord Adler protested.

“Take him away and lock him in one of his rooms!” Lady Siegel snapped. “And get this door down immediately!”

My shaking fingers finally managed to pry open the mouth and I yanked it open to reveal. . .nothing. That is, the interior of the bag was a black hole of nothingness.
